Jario Sidescroll Engine

by Steve Haney

Jario is a simple but functional 2d side scrolling engine built in JS. I built a small game using the engine to show what it can do. You play as Blockhead fighting the evil square blocks of doom. There are no images in this project and I used no libraries.

Thanks for checking out my project. Sorry the level is so short - most of my 10k was taken building the engine. The engine easily supports multiple levels. Each level is a separate html file. All elements in the world are divs so building levels is as simple as adding more divs. I'm building a bigger world just for fun that I'll post here in a few days if anyone is interested. Cheers!

Nice work. And it tells me I'm awesome, so even better. :) Can't wait to see the next level.

I was expecting better graphics actually - and the movement isn't that smooth or great either. Maybe I'm missing something here...?

Thanks for the comments, fellas. Effell - it's % based so that I can stick it inside of whatever I want to and it will resize. If you're on like 1920x1080 and play it full screen it will seem a bit choppy. Size your browser down and it will be smoother. Also, it runs much more smoothly in FF or Chrome than IE. And as for graphics? 10k ain't much :P The engine is built so that I could easily swap in images for any of the objects. Right now everything is just style'd divs. At some point I'll probably make a non 10k version with actual graphics and a bigger world for fun.

This is definitely a good start for a platformer engine, except the physics feels a little unnatural. I can understand the graphics at 10k. It will definitely look better with images.

What could you build with only 10 kilobytes of code?
